Propane Properties

Propane or LPG is a hydrocarbon (C3H8) and is processed from crude oil and natural gas.  Propane boils (vaporizes) at -44 degrees Fahrenheit.  The propane in your tank is pressurized so it is a liquid.  By the time it is used in your home or business it is, most times, in a vapor form.

Because propane in its processed state is odorless and colorless a commercial odorant, typically ethyl mercaptin, is added.  The odorant permits the detection of leaks into the environment before the gas concentration in the air reaches a flammable level.  Have your propane delivery person allow you to smell the propane and remember its odor.

Propane gas is heavier than air and without proper ventilation will collect in low places like basements, stairwells and pits in the floor.
